So far so good. Up to 26km in 2:45:58, although I have to get faster if I want to beat a 4 hour marathon!
I'm really enjoying the long runs, and the difference in my fitness is amazing. I look back at my Garmin Forerunner records from July, and my heart-rate used to skyrocket as soon as I started running, maxing out and ragged for the first couple kilometers before settling down somewhat. These days it's a beautiful graph, slowly sliding upwards from rest and, depending on my speed, flattening out 10-20bpm slower than before.
I also notice that previously when I would get tired from running, it was my stamina that would give in first. My legs never felt tired after a run, I just ran out of energy. These days, especially after last weeks 26km, I can definitely feel it in my legs, they are what wear out now, not my stamina.
I currently do most of my running in minimalist Saucony Mirage 2's, a small 4mm toe/heel drop, and my Vibram Kimodo Sports on my shorter runs. I sometimes get a dull ache in my heels if I run in the Vibrams too much, but that's a technique issue I still need to work on. Eventually I'll chuck the shoes all together.
Running is building my self-confidence as well as making me healthier. It may not be for everyone, but it's certainly for me!!
