HOT Pavement

Went out in the early afternoon for a BFR and the trail which is wonderfully shaded earlier in the day is an inferno in the early afternoon. We're dealing with heat advisories in my area for the last couple of weeks and I was able to get 2 miles in before heading for the grass.

I had set a goal of 3 miles for the run. I did run most of the remaining mile in the grass but had developed a large blister on my right heel. I'm sure I wasn't doing any heel striking... must've been doing something wrong.

When I got home I thought for sure I had no skin on my feet and was suprised when I went to wash up and inspect them... only this heal blister and a raw spot where an older blister came lose in the crease of my second toe on my left foot. My feet were quite sore all night but were fine in the morning.

I drained that new heel blister and it was a brown fluid but drained well and seems fine now. My heel is still a bit tender but I'm planning on doing a slow run tonight again with the Couch 2 5k class.

I'm looking forward to meeting some area BFR'ers this weekend in Des Moines. I'm hoping to get some feedback on my form from people with more experience. After parusing the gross picture thread I've come to the conclusion that my feet look amazing in comparison to what some have experienced. I've yet to post any pictures of them... might get around to that soon.

Happy Running!

I view hot pavement as an opportunity to increase cadence to it's appropriate (barefoot) rate. :)

Yeah... I wasn't taking any extra time to savor the smell of burning flesh... That's how I made it 2 miles. :)

Hot pavement builds character! (and I've heard that in moderation it helps build pads, too) However, this time of year in Las Vegas we're consistently over 100 degrees all day long so I leave my barefoot running to the wee hours of the morning or late evenings. I do go out midday with my invisibleshoes. My feet get quite toasty with the 4mm ones, but the new 6mm ones are great for HOT pavement.

Good to know... I've got the 4mm ones too and so far they've been fine on the hot days.
