"Guthrie Gallop" 10k run and 5k run or walk - race report from a barefoot prespective.

I participated today in both the 10k and the 5k runs of the "29th Annual Guthrie Gallop." It takes place in Sayre, PA.

It was my first official unshod 10k race, so I PR'd - 46:43.55 was my time.

The course for both races are fairly flat. The 5 is just a shortened portion of the 10. The weather was great for running, a little on the humid side especially after a downpour that came toward the end of the 10k.

The 10k started at 9AM and the 5k started at 10:30AM, so there was plenty of time to do both.
The running surface was primarily blacktop and in areas very rough blacktop. I looked forward to stoned driveway entrances in areas the pavement was so rough. I was able to seek out a few grassy spots (I like the occasional grassy areas, I can close a gap in them). The puddles from an earlier rain were simply awesome..... I just get a kick out of everyone else wearing sneakers running around and going out of their way to miss them, I got to run right through them.

I didn't PR on the 5k mainly because I promised my 9 year old daughter I would run the 5k with her and stick by her side and that is just what I did. We got a new PR for her though. This was her 3rd 5k and she ran it in 35 minutes.

I really need to figure out a way to attach my go pro camera to the back of me. I want to capture the faces and the audio of what others say. I did take a digital recorder with me today but only capture one worthy clip that I've found so far. Maybe if I ever have the time (like that'll happen) I'll be able to listen to all of the clip and single out some more. Until then here is the one clip I caught

One lady saying to another "He's running barefoot!" and the other lady's reply "Are you serious!"

Some of you may have seen these already but here they are again,

Even though this race was less than 5 miles from my house I am glad I came prepared with a change of close. After the downpour during the 10k I would have froze waiting for the start of the 5k. Also my feet looked like they had been in a bathtub for way too long too. I think this may be contributing to how my soles feel tonight as I sit here and type. No blisters but thanks to the rough pavement and the dampness, they feel like they are smoldering a little. They aren't on fire, just smoldering.

Overall a good time. 94 ran the 10k, 171 ran the 5k and 53 walked the 5k. If you ever find yourself in the Southern Tier of NY State or the Northern Tier of PA - look this one up, just google it.... "Guthrie Gallop" they've done it 29 times so I'm guessing it's gonna continue..........
