Denied at the Gym!

So there I was, minding my own business on treadmill # 3, listening to podcasts on my iPhone when the young lady at the counter comes walking toward me. She make eye contact. I avoid eye contact and keep running. She gets closer and makes a motion to take out my Yurbuds. I avoid eye contact. She is standing right front of the mill waving at me.

I relent.

She tells me to stop running. Why? I ask. She says I can't run barefoot. Why not? I ask. She says you just can't. Is there a rule? I ask. She says yes. Show it to me. I say. She says ok, but please stop running.

I relent.

I slip my flips back on and walk over to the desk. She and another woman tell me I can't run barefoot. Why not? I ask again. It's the rules they say. Show me, I ask.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's in the contract. OK, show me then, I say. They sort of ignore me for a bit while they flip through the contract and shuffle some papers. The second lady comes back and says it's a health issue. Show me where it says it's a health issue. Well what if you have *-----* on your feet, and it gets on the treadmill, we can't have that now can we. What about the locker room, I ask. Well, you are supposed to wear flips in there. Show me, I say. Then the first girl says it's a safety issue, that you could catch your toe on the edge and there would be blood everywhere. Uh, ok. There are a thousand ways to injure yourself in a gym, and I'm pretty sure I signed a waiver when I signed up.

So. They pull out this MASSIVE book and tell me they are POSITIVE the rule that requires me to wear shoes in this gym is in there somewhere, but they can't take the time to find it today. Ok, look it up and let me know tomorrow.

I left my email, telephone number and blog address.

I went and changed into my vibrams and went to wait for another mill as my got stolen as I was getting scolded.

Ok, they are worried about my health or the health of others. I won't walk barefoot in the change room, are you freaking kidding? At least the treadmill has shod runners on it! haha! And if they were so worried about the health and safety of us patrons, they wouldn't have a shared floor and drain trough in the showers…

If they don't get back to me by tomorrow like they promised, I am going to go for a barefoot run there, because obviously they have no problem with it.

I personally think, they just decided that this CAN't be right and there must be a rule somewhere. My question is… Aren't the Yoga classes all barefoot?

Seems like a pretty solid double standard!

I won't say the name of the gym, but i'll give you a hint. It starts with a ‘G' and ends in a ‘oodlife Fitness McKenzie town'.

That's all I have to say about that. For now. Dammit. Does this make me a zealot?

First they wouldn't let me run in socks on the indoor track or the treadmill, so Iasked what type of minimal shoe would be ok. After I briefly explained why I wanted to train barefoot one of the trainer said he will check with the management and let me know what would be acceptable. They have a paper on the wall saying that shoes is mandatory but nobody knows why and what qualifies as a shoe. And I gave them the example of swimmers and yoga classes being barefoot.

The next day, he approached me and introduced me to the director and she said she had checked with their local insurrance agent and they think huaraches or socks with grip at the bottom would be alright, but they needed to check with the insurrance headquarters to confirm.

So Idid what they said, I ran in huaraches or socks on the treadmill a couple of times, everybody was looking at me and all the staff member were informed that it was ok to let me run in my weird homemade shoes or socks. I figure once they get used to the idea of minimalist running they will loosen up. Ihate running in socks, and huaraches are not that comfy either compared to the real thing.

A few weeks later one guy was proud to show me that they posted an article on barefoot running on the bulletin board. Then he said he wanted me to wear one of their teeshirts for my next race. I don't race, I started running in May, ran a 10k in November and that's all, I'm not a superstar, just a beginner runner who needs the feedback from her soles to learn how to run properly.

I guess when they see a barefoot runner for the first time they freak out and think it must be wrong. But with some patience and a little education I will make them more and more barefoot friendly. I don't want to switch to another gym for a variety of reasons and I run there only to train for hills on the treadmilll. I don't mind wearing water shoes on the bike or for classes.

I hope your gym will offer a solution. Try working with them on a minimalist option while they get educated on barefoot running and try full barefoot again in a few weeks.

Good luck.

you can't be bf because you might have poop on your feet? please, you'll pay more attention than someone wearing shoes. does that mean they make people with shoes on wash them before they enter and use the equipment? do they make eveyone wash their hands when they enter if they are so afraid of communicable diseases? i doubt it.

they say you can't be bf because of insurance reasons? do they teach everyone proper form to lift before they allow them to use anything? i know they don't. they contradict themselves and they know it. you are paying to use their facilities so ya, they can set the rules. but if they don't have them in place i would challenge them. you did sign a waiver that if you get hurt you won't sue so remind them of that.

good luck

I almost wrote a blog about this issue, but saw yours so I didn't. Mine has to do with my university gym (aren't universities supposed to be more liberal?) So when it was warm out I would use the locker room to change and shower in during some free time I had between classes and work. I avoided eye contact with everyone as I walked from the locker room on the bottom floor, up two flights of stairs and out the door. One day on my way back in I noticed two people talking and looking over at me. I heard one guy say "I'll take care of it." He followed me and told me I had to wear shoes. This was a young undergrad (I am a graduate student (not trying to sound elitest but my point was that I knew he really didn't have an answer for me)) so I thought I would talk with him for a minute about the policy. I explained that I run barefoot and was simply using the locker room to store my stuff and to take a shower. He said I'd still have to wear shoes while in the building and I could then put my shoes somewhere outside. I said i'll put them in a bush. A young lady laughed. After showering I went upstairs and asked to talk to someone about policies at the gym. The director came out and had already heard about me. He said that I could step on something and get injured. I told them I'd sign a waiver (it's weird that the school doesn't have you sign a waiver before using the gym right?). He went back in and talked to a higher up who said that it was fine as long as I assured them they were not liable (didn't make me sign anything) and as long as I did not try to eat at the Quiznos located on the other side of the gym. I assured him I do not eat with my feet and so I can have some form of shoes on at that time if I choose to venture there. Now that it is so cold out I have been running on the indoor track in Vibrams. I really want to go barefoot in there, but I'm a non confrontational person and don't really want to deal with another person coming up and telling me to put on shoes.

I wash my feet every single day with soap, but I've never ever washed the soles of my gym shoes. Have you? Has anybody? The rules make no sense whatsoever, of course. I got told "No" at my local YMCA too.
