A triumphant lack of progress on losing weight (or, marbles in the mud)

This is a great post stomper. It's great to see you apply lessons from barefoot running to your diet. I think you are on the right path about how you feel about food. I think the first thing that we as Americans don't do well is to treat food as what it should be: a source of sustainance and enjoyment.

I'm not a big fan of particular diets either, but I am giving paleo a spin right now. What Ilike about it is that, besides the general prohibition of grains and processed foods, you can eat any food in any amount. It's really caused me to detach myself from eating for eating sake...the whole ritual 3 meals a day. Ieat when I'm hungry, or when Ifeel like enjoying something. The foods I crave on the diet are the foods you can eat anyway, so the restrictions on my diet haven't been that demanding. And when I want to eat something that isn't on the program, Ijust do it. I don't feel guilty about it because I otherwise eat very healthy on the diet. It's been great.

It sounds like your attitude is about the same, and I think that's a good place to be.

If it feels good, do it. Barefoot running, eating, life in general. Its all just about listening to your body. I'm very glad you've found what feels good to you. What most people don't get about food is the difference between tasting good, and feeling good. If you think you're body is "craving" McDonalds, but you feel like throwing up a while after eating it, thats probably not exactly what your body was trying to tell you. Eat foods that make you feel good, not just for the moment while your eating them, but for the rest of the day. If at the end of the day you can still say "I'm glad I ate that." Then you are listening to your body. Everyones body works a little differently, so there definitely aren't food that are "good" or "bad", just foods that make you feel good, and foods that make you feel bad. Theres no guilt involved with it, and no one else knows about it except you. Don't say "Well, I'll feel bad about it but..... I'm gonna eat that cake! Oh, I hope no-one saw me." Instead say "You know, I'm gonna feel like crap if I eat that, so I'll pass." or even "YESCAKE!", depending on how your body takes cake.

Even if you don't lose weight ever, your body will be more healthy if you listen to it. I've started listening to my body a lot more, and I've been eating a lot more fruits and vegetables, and a lot less fatty foods. Its not because I care about my weight, I'm under-weight actually, and its not because Ithink that certains foods are "bad" and I have to force myself to avoid them, its because I honestly no longer like these foods. Sausage and pretty much all ham/pork stuff makes me feel kinda sick to my stomach now, so I no longer eat it. Yes, I have even given up bacon, because, although I still love the taste, feeling my entire body become covered in grease and smelling like bacon for the rest of the day just aren't worth it. Eating an apple or a banana, on the other hand, makes me feel really good even hours later. And just because these foods make me feel bad doesn't mean that they are "bad foods", because everyone has different stuff that makes them feel good or bad. Just listen to your body, and keep collecting those marbles.
