Hi,

I have been minimalist running since November 2012, and barefoot since June 2013 (maximum of 6 miles totally barefoot). Took it very slowly, and built up gradually. Also spent most of the summer weekends totally barefoot, and I wear minimalist shoes at work.

Approx 4 weeks ago I did a 10 mile run, and ever since, my right foot feels like the tendons behind the 3rd and 2nd toes (around the 2nd metatarsals) are "catching" on each other, as I can feel them "twanging" on each other. As my foot rolls inwards, it starts at 3rd toe then 2nd toe does it.

Not painful, but annoying as it feels wrong, and I would like to sort it out.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Steve

Possibilities include a shortening of the tibialis muscle which runs into those tendons. If that is the case, a foam roller (gently with some flexing motion) may help resolve. If it is chronic, the tendons will lose elasticity and create that type of sensation. Another possibility is that the calf muscles (gastroc and soleus) are both tight and inhibiting the anterior compartment muscles including the tibialis anterior and peroneii. If that is the case, the gluts are probably tight and so is the popliteus in back of the knee. Another possibility is that the ankle is locked up at the ankle mortise. A good sports chiropractor may be able to properly advise you better and treat this if necessary to a successful conclusion using manipulation and some form of myofascial release treatment

Doc is correct. If this is a newly enlarged nerve (swollen), then it's not necessarily a neuroma at this stage. If it's just irritated, icing, resting, and changing your footwear and activities can save it from becoming a full-on neuroma. You have to want to make the sacrifices to ensure it doesn't get worse though, and trust me, you don't want it to get worse.

Hi,

I went to the doctors on Monday who confirmed it was MN.

I have ordered a gel toe separator.

I will also stop wearing those tight fitting high heels (joke!).

I have only worn Vivobarefoot and xero shoes for the past 11 months, and spent a lot of the summer totally barefoot.

Thanks guys!!!

Not at night while you sleep, no. I have that exact model. I believe the package even says they are not to be slept in. Just wear them for as long as is recommended on the package. They are rigid, somewhat, so they can become uncomfortable.

How about Correct Toes? They are flexible and can be worn in your shoes. They were developed by a barefoot-friendly, barefoot-supporter podiatrist, Dr. Ray McClanahan. Make sure you get the right size though, because that's critical to their working correctly for you: https://nwfootankle.com/correct-toes and http://www.amazon.com/Correct-Toes-...8&qid=1381709943&sr=8-3&keywords=correct+toes

Just ordered the "correct toes". I have heard many many good things about them.

Haven't run since mid September, and have a NHS (free medical care) podiatrist appt in mid January (2 weeks today),

I really don't want some "specialist" saying "oh you need these £400 inserts...." .

will let you know how I get on.

Since I originally posted this, it has calmed down a lot. Now it feels like a very slight sensation in the right foot, and occasionally both feet start to tingle in a pulsing way (on, then off, then on, then off).

I have worn the Correct Toes since I got them yesterday, and today I wore them in Vivobarefoot evo3 shoes. Very comfortable.

Will continue to update this with progress.

Seeing podiatrist soon, see what they say.

Went to the Podiatrist (free, National Health Service).

Apparently I "need" to wear supportive shoes with a stiff sole and arch support.

She watched me walk up and down a few times, prodded my foot and then gave me an insole with a lump inside it.

As soon as I got out I removed it and went back to my Correct Toes and Pedag metatarsal pads.

A total waste of time, apparently "barefoot running" is OK for a few people, especially if they are light, but not someone of "my stature" (6'0" and 175 pounds) and there have been a lot of injuries caused by barefoot running. I told her I had run a half marathon 6 miles barefoot, and 7 miles in huaraches, and I think because I didn't fit into her "normal" patient profile (elderly overweight diabetic patients) then she was not willing to listen to more recent research (ie not just what everyone was doing 20 years ago, "you need an ORTHOTIC INSERT"!!!!

But the Correct Toes have been brilliant. Going to start 0.5 mile soon...

Let us know how you do.

One thing all panelists as well as the moderator agreed on last week was to avoid cotton socks always for everybody. Must be different for U.K. feet I'm guessing.

BTW, those Correct Toes you have look different than the ones I have. Yours has a spacer for the last two toes; mine doesn't. I guess they made a revision to them after I got mine. When you wear them outside of your shoes, do they stay on your feet? I always had trouble with mine, because they didn't stay on my feet.

Have you tried wearing them barefoot, without socks?
