by Bob Neinast There's a very interesting project out there by a photographer named Jimmy Nelson. The project is Before They Pass Away, looking at some of the few remaining unique human cultures before they all get homogenized away. An interesting thing (to me) is how many of them still go barefoot. Read more of this post
Very nice post TJ and some amazing photo's. Thanks for sharing.
In 2004 I was privileged enough to spend some time with the Kombai of West Papua. They are (were) extremely isolated and the vast majority of them still are, although due to logging interests this may well change.
Clothing was minimal and footwear was limited to hand made sandals if indeed it was used at all. Their perception of western clothing was that it was smelly and unhygienic and I have to say that in the climate of Papua they were right. I ditched my shoes after the 1st few days and have rarely worn them since even though I was only there for a relatively short time.
Of course, in colder climes this seems unusual to most but your body becomes conditioned. Unless it's actually freezing I rarely wear more than shorts and a long sleeved tee and don't feel particularly cold.
