International Triathlon Union now allows barefoot running!

I know that Triathlon Canada has not updated the ruling as of yet. However Triathlon Ontario has assured me that they will allow for barefoot running in any triathlon in Ontario. I've sent a few more emails to the ITU to try and find out how this all came about.

    Check the race rules

The ITU has changed their policy on barefoot running, and it is now permissible as of Dec 2014. No more threats of DSQ or any such nonsense any more! Horray!!

    Barefoot Running no D/C!

Just received an email from the ITU that barefoot running (totally barefoot) is now acceptable and will not cause a DSQ result! I've emailed them back with thanks and I asked them why the change of heart. Will follow up when I get more information

    Check the race rules

Just to let everyone know I have officially signed up for my half ironman on July 6th. They don't seem to be backing down the ruling, but I'm hoping to have better luck with the officials if I talk to them in person at the race site. I'll keep emailing them though to try and get this resolved.

    Check the race rules

In case anyone is still interested I'v got another response back from the WTC. I asked them if Ironman Canada, Ironman USA, or Ironman Mont Tremblant required shoes to be worn (as these are the WTC races I'm likely to complete in the near future) these are the responses.... IRONMAN Canada...

    Check the race rules

Longboard is quite right I have an email from the WTC stating that there is no barefoot rule. However they did state that "we are going to leave it to the discretion of the race director". I made another inquiry if any WTC events require shoes by order of the race director. Will report back...

    Check the race rules

I was unaware that the WTC was a different triathlon federation, forgive my ignorance. I suppose my confusion arose because I knew of ITU events that were at one time giving away spots for WTC events. I didn't figure that the two federations worked so closely together, but it doesn't seem like...

    Check the race rules

Longboard, What is the other triathlon sanctioning body that you are refering to? I always thought the ITU was the only sanctioning body.

    Check the race rules

If it's ok I'll post my email here... Thanks, for the information. By the way I was asking if it was only the run route where you couldn't be barefoot because my local triathlon club is denying me admission due to my barefoot running. You'll have to start at the bottom and work up....The last...

    Check the race rules

Mikkel, and other triathletes, I've got an email from them today that states that "socks" are also not permitted to be worn while running as well. I've sent another email to try and figure out if it's a thickness issue or if it's the material involved. They are claiming that the whole "foot...

    Check the race rules

Mikkel, Well at least I suppose they are willing to discuss it. I've also sent an email to them to ask just what they mean by a "shoe" according to the rules. I'm considering running in a barefoot sandal if it will avoid a DSQ, but I'm unsure if they will allow me even that much. I think...

    Check the race rules

Just if you want some more to read here is a link to an article posted on the ITU website where an athlete ran (for part) of the course barefoot and was only given a time penalty http://www.triathlon.org/news/article/vidal_hewitt_win_in_wellington "The day was a tough one though for Samuels...

    Check the race rules

I also have emailed them to ask what foot coverings would be considered a "shoe". The only answer I received is that any minimalist shoes are considered a "shoe" under the definition of the rule. I did specifically ask about the possibility of wearing hauraches, plasti dip socks and barefoot...

    Winter Challenge - 2013

Glad to see you're still running Barefoot YOW. Those are some pretty impressive stats considering the temperatures! Wish I could run this cold, but I've been a real wimp this winter. I really haven't run outside since about November!

    Check the race rules

Mikkel, Let me know the response you recieve from the ITU (if any). I know from my past discussions that they still will mandate a DSQ for barefoot runners. Interestingly enough as I stated earlier the DSQ rule technically only applies to runners who "run without shoes". When I commented...

    Check the race rules

You need to read the rules more carefully. It's true that the rules state that you can't run the run portion barefoot, but there is only a DSQ for running without shoes. If an athlete has shoes with them this should be alright because it doesn't specifically say that you have to wear them on...

    Confronted at the gym

Most ironically gyms tend to be very unfriendly towards barefooters. I got so tired of the gym I was at, that I eventually quit. If you can believe it the manager was suggesting that other gym patrons were threatening to quit, over the 1 or 2 times I went barefoot. His thoughts were that he...

    Barefoot Runner/ Podiatrist Conversations

Hence the reason I called them "supposive" doctors. If they were only internet trolls you would think they would be able to moderate their forum a little better. I am impressed with how Jason is handling himself here though. He's taking a more "let's all be friends, and learn tact". I'm...

    Barefoot Runner/ Podiatrist Conversations

I'm well aware of the podiatrist forums. Actually when I first started barefoot running my emediate response was to try and find out what those who were against it actually thought. I wanted to challenge my position to see if it could hold up to rational scrutiny. I went through a similar...

    Ontario Triathletes

I would suggest annaweltman to choose races from the Sommersault series. They seem to be a little leery in allowing barefoot runners, but they stated they wouldn't disqualify. If the race is santioned by OAT they use ITU rules. Personally I would run the race barefoot and carry shoes with...
