    me too. My feet are never the limiting factor. It's always my general level of fitness which becomes harder to maintain as I get older.

    agree. Listen to your body. People are very different in this respect. Our trecking guides were fascinated that my toes were still pink and warm as we crossed the glacier towards Everest Base Camp. If they were cold or numb, I would have put something on my feet.

    it is many years since I visited Bavaria but I recall that most footpaths were very regimented, 1.5m wide and covered in barefoot unfriendly gravel. Not natural surfaces at all.

    I almost never use soap anywhere apart from my hands. I don't eat with my feet so see no need to upset the natural balance of oils and skin flora (micro organisms). I'm not saying everyone should do this but it works for me.

    thanks for telling us this story. I completed a 2 week volcano hiking trip to Indonesia last year, all 100% barefoot. Fortunately our tour leader's father never wore shoes so he never questioned my choice. A fabulous trip in a great country and lovely people.
