Hey everyone, I know this is mostly a running site, but I wondered what other activities you do barefoot?

Yesterday I did a 4 hour run/hike in Zion National Park. Mostly in Merrells, but one steep section I took them off and scrambled up the sandstone barefoot. I loved it. It was incredible how my feet could grip the rocks. I used to hate hiking, but now have found a way to really enjoy it. On the side of the trail, on way down, I saw a barefoot track. So I know there are others out there.

I have done several shorter hikes with my family barefoot and it is a way to keep the hike interesting.

So what other activities can be enhanced by being barefoot?

I really like hiking barefoot

I really like hiking barefoot like you said. I hiked a bit in Yosemite barefoot and it was amazing! I felt like I got to see a side of Yosemite that most miss. I saw somewhere on here, I think in the Pub, where someone rappels barefoot. I think that would be quite the experience myself and would love to try that someday.

I cut my grass barefoot. I use a reel mower so I guess it's not as dangerous (as if a pair of Nike's will save you from a mower blade anyway)

I actually started going

I actually started going barefoot back in May because I had to cut the grass and didn't want my feet so hot. My self-propelled push mower's handle is really long, and if my hand leaves the handle the blade stops. So there's really no danger of my foot getting under the deck. And the feeling of walking on all that freshly cut grass is soooo amazing.

Since then I've done almost anything and everything barefoot. Shopping, the beach, mechanic work on our cars, you name it.

Hiking is something I've been dying to try barefoot. Unfortunately there just really aren't that many GOOD nature trails near where I live. And when I say good, I mean something where you hike out to a destination, i.e. a waterfall, some high lookout, cool rock formation, etc. Most of those are several hours' drive away.

Ram, I don't want to say that Nike's will save you from anything, so I will say that shoes in general can save you from flying debris which is why it is recommended that people wear footwear while mowing. Growing up as a kid I lived off a gravel road. Gravel was constantly getting flung onto the lawn, most of the time never seen while mowing. I've had gravel break the kitchen window, I got in trouble for that even though the mower shot it out, and I've also gotten hit by chunks of gravel flying out the back. Most more modern mowers I think have a rubber like flap on the back now that will help prevent this from happening towards the back where you are standing, but not all do. Anyhow, just my two cents.

We don't have any gravel or major hazards around our yard. I even trim with the weed-eater while barefoot. No big deal.

I used to always mow in sandals or flip flops. Although this is when I thought barefoot was dangerous and unhealthy too as I was a kid and thats what I was taught.

Been mowing lawn with a rotary mower for 2 years now. Don't have to worry about washing my shoes when I mow the road ditch

I wouldn't recommend weed-wacking poison ivy barefooted if you can't control the itch impulse (check out my thread in the gross feet section. I'm just about a 24/7 barefooter - barefoot except for work and a few uninformed/uneducatable places that require footwear. I'm a member of the Society For Barefoot Living - barefooters.org. I'm planning on hiking at least some of the Adirondack Mts 46 highest peaks next summer.

That was Ahcuah, the barefoot hiker/tennis player/rappeller/blogger from Ohio.

Thanks for those links, I

Thanks for those links, I check them out. I hadn't even thought of tennis. That sounds fun.

As for work activities, I am a farmer and do a lot of dangerous jobs. This last year, I have become much more aware and have not hurt my back (usually at least once a year prior), no sprained ankles, and no heel pain (suffered 3 years of PF). So being barefoot has had that effect, or I have just been extremely lucky this year.

Very cool indeed.  I

Very cool indeed. I especially like this photo, as it looks like he is using his feet as if they were hands:

Barefoot things I do other than running:

Skimboarding, surfing, tennis, frisbee, basketball (not playing with others), I ride my longboard barefoot. Yardwork, gardening, hiking.

Skimboarding and surfing don't count, since all pros do it barefoot. It's like saying you swim barefoot!

Longboarding counts, even though early old school skaters were all barefoot.

Frisbee was made for bare feet, but these days we'll have to give credit for that.

Yardwork & gardening, why anyone would do it shod I can't understand, but for some reason most do!

Hiking....I would'nt be able to enjoy it in footwear. Most hikers complain of blisters, etc., but not the barefoot hikers.

Basketball on a driveway: perfect for bare feet. In the gym with others, don't know, never tried it.

BG, your enjoying life too much. How often do you have to resort to footwear?

How about barefoot sledding

How about barefoot sledding In this I mean, grab a sled or a toboggan, hook it up to a dogteam lead attached it to you get a 5 year old kid to sit on the sled and go for a run. The kid has a blast and you get some good strength training, especially when you hit dry concrete. ;-)

Wow you all are awesome and I suck lol. Unless 'just sitting there' counts I dont do a whole lot bf yet! Even around the house I have a gravel drive around most of the house that I can't navigate bf yet, most of the time I have to put on my crocks just to walk across the driveway to get to the road lol. I have tried bf in the garden this past summer but to be honest in mid day it was too hot and burnt my feet after a couple minutes! When its wet its too muddy, which isnt a huge problem except I got to cross the driveway again to get to a hose, and after all that I have wet feet when I get in the house. Then all the creepy crawlies still freak me out. I dont like getting bitten or stung! Hiking I'll work on next year maybe in vff. Depends on the trail, most I have been on are full of huge gravel or small boulders like grapefruit size. I think it would make stream crossings a lot quicker though!

I try! I resort to shoes alot, during the week. I have to wear shoes for work but after work they come right off. On the weekends when not out in public places, kids events, running errands, etc. I am barefoot as much as possible.
