Or, to be more precise, what kind of distances are we talking about when evaluating the benefits of running as they relate to health (cholesterol levels, glucose levels and mood)? Recently had these issues rear their scary heads, and wish to avoid throwing meds at them!

Good question. I'm moving this to the Health forum with a redirect that will expire in one day. You should see it there. Thanks.

I read somewhere that people who jogged 20miles a week had better results reducing bad cholesterol and boosting good cholesterol than those who ran 10miles per week.
I'd personally used a combination of exercise and diet, i don't think you can separate the two. Age is also a consideration.
With a good workout comes a good nights sleep, with a good nights sleep our mood improves. Being barefoot and playful also helps.:)
I'm no expert, but managed to smash my cholesterol pretty quickly once became proactive about my health.

The 15 - 25 mile a week range is pretty good for overall health...I believe you get the vast majority health benefit at that amount and you hit the law of diminishing returns above that... 20 miles is a good spot to aim for.

I run for enjoyment firstly and health reasons second...health conscious people are more likely to be runners and probably gravitate to a more healthy lifestyle overall.

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I just started BF, it just happened that I had a routine yearly physical which showed some very troublesome numbers (glucose and lipids). So I have a very definite baseline. Diet changes and running; my doc gave me 4 months to address these issues before considering meds. Should be interesting to see what I can achieve! Will post back with progress!

Best,
