Jealousy of, and curiosity about, you cold weather runners overcame my fear of frostbite and cold. After a red eye to NYC on Tuesday night, I found myself in 28 degree Queens but there was almost no wind yesterday, Wednesday. Running opportunity?? I started out in my NB Minimus and warmed up with 3.5 miles. Then shucked my shoes under a park bench and ran around the HS athletic field six times for another 2.5 miles barefoot. I basically stayed out of the snow. Passersby and people waiting for buses gave me the my interesting stares. I felt pretty good generally. (Would I have noticed if any toes fell off??). When I went to retrieve my shoes (luckily they were still there) I used a bit of snow to clean off any salt. That might have been a mistake?? Boy did my feet feel cold afterwards! Anyway, it took a couple hours before feeling went back into my toes. Other than my usual leg and ankle stiffness, I think I am none-the-worse for the experience. Nothing has turned blue or fallen off. I am not sure I will try it again before heading back to CA tomorrow.View attachment 5524
You're a braver man than I (Gunga Din)!
Most of the reason I run in min-shoes through the winter is that I am continually held up by lights and traffic, for anything up to a minute 10 to 15 times, during my commute. Having run it a few times over the years at just below freezing I've decided that warm feet are preferable to discomfort for a few hours after each run!
Brrrrrrrr.
Maybe you will enjoy CA that much more now, eh?
Looks like you managed one for your own personal bragging rights, in any case.
My personal minimum for bf on sidewalk is more like 45-50, so more power to ya
I had a nice 5 mile run to work this morning at about -17C. Comfortably warm the whole way down but not running hard enough to be aware of sweating.

Picture a little fuzzy as my phone was close to frozen. Also I feel a little like Longboard as I can't figure why the thumbnail came out sideways. One hour run with air temp of -28C and wind chill of -40C. View attachment 5537
