Anybody up for a barefoot Hocking Hills Mid-Winter Hike (OH)?

Every year there is a huge hike at Hocking Hills State Park, with upwards of 5,600 people. It is scheduled on the Saturday as close to January 21 as possible, and this year that is January 19.

For those familiar with the park, they start at the top entrance to Old Man's Cave, head through the gorge to the cave itself, then back up to the rim, across the A-frame bridge, and then along the rim trail to Cedar Falls, where there is bean soup and cornbread available. From there it continues to Ash Cave, where there are buses waiting to take you back to your car.

I think the weather will be weather-compatible (depending on you cold-weather barefoot conditioning). Starting temperature will probably be at right about 32 degrees, and the high for the day should be around 48. There is no snow on the ground and none in the forecast.

The tricky part is that there is often a line to get into the gorge (but then I've always gotten there around 10am, and continuous starts begin at 9am, so it might be better earlier). Or, one can bypass the gorge portion and head straight across the A-frame bridge. So, this year I'm contemplating getting there by 8:30am to see when a good time to start might be.

I've done this 3 times before (and, unbeknownst to me, got my picture taken by a reporter).

I wrote a little something about it on my blog, here: http://ahcuah.wordpress.com/2011/10/24/the-hocking-hills-mid-winter-hike/

Here's a page discussing the hike: http://www.heartofhocking.com/Winter_Hike_Hocking_Hills.htm

It is always fun, just for the comments, if nothing else. A whole crowd of barefoot hikers would be awesome!

Well I'm late but looks like you had a great time! I wouldn't have been able to pull that off bare. I've been wanting to do the Indian Run down there in September, hopefully my feet will be up to it this year since running even in minimalist isn't working to great for me.

Indian Run in Sept? If the timing is right I might be interested in a trip- I love barefoot hiking... minimalist if its too cold for my feet to handle, but Sept should work I can't imagine Jan since I have issues with the cold). Care to share more info?

Sure, it's sept 21st. 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 (k) distances. www.1800hocking.com/indianrun

It's also cheap! 25 gets you into any, right up to a week prior. I don't know how rocky or rugged the course is - I plan on checking it out sometime over the summer. It would be neat to have a few barefooters there, I'm sure it would be the first time. It is the same weekend I think as the north coast 24 hr endurance run, or else I could probably convince Hannah to come down as well.

Tomorrow is this year's hike, and the temperature is supposed to be above freezing! (Barely.) I'll be doing the hike again.

I was barefoot for only about 0.4 miles of the hike. While the air temperature was within my limits (it started at 32° and rose to 50° by the end of the hike), the ground itself had been under a hard freeze for at least a month. I bet its temperature was 20° or below, and that much cold was obviously seeping up through my soles way too quickly for my safety. I did hike about 3.4 miles wearing flip-flops. That extra bit of insulation from the ground was quite sufficient to keep my feet warm, even when slush or snow would creep over the edges. The problem was, though, that they were darn slippery. There are few things worse than wet flip-flops to walk on, particularly when hiking. The other 1.4 miles I did wearing moccasins. This was on the portion that had a lot of uphill and downhill. The flip-flops just weren't safe for that.

I'll probably write a blog entry sometime next week about the experience (with some pictures).

I wear flip-flops when going to the gym. The problem is that it rains a good deal in FL, and I encounter the same traction issue that you've experienced. I like flip-flops because they are cheap. I think that they sell flip flops with tread, but they aren't cheap. Though probably better than slipping and clobbering myself with a fall. :D

The slippery part was between my sole and the top of the flip-flops.

This is one big reason I go for the huaraches/sandals... basically just flip flops with an extra heal strap. But yeah, expensive! I've been on some pretty steep rock faces on trips to the mountains and feel pretty confident about the Unshoes PahTempe. Though if my feet get sweaty, and combined with maybe a bit of mud, they can still roll around the foot given enough force (kind of saw my life flash before my eyes once, and decided to tighten them up a bit since I normally wear them pretty loose :D) . But so far the best lateral support short of closed shoes that I've found. I've not tried but I bet you could play tennis in them.

Of course barefoot is still best! Just the darn cold limitations.
