Mileage Reporting 47th Week of November 2014

12 miles, rain, mud, hills.
Averaged out at 10.20 mm including the climbs and warmup. I'm trying to slow down, with varying success, my target pace would be in the high 11's, but i really struggle to hold form at that speed. I suppose it's something i'm going to have to be patient with and become less hare and more tortoise, even if my tortoise has go fast stripes painted on it :)

Did my last run before tomorrow's half-marathon, just an easy easy 5 kilometers. Yesterday went into Philly and picked up my racing stuff, wind was pretty bad, I'm glad the race wasn't yesterday. Forecast is now looking great for tomorrow, temps in the lows 30s at the start, dry and light winds. I know the course and have been imagining it in my head and what I should be feeling like as I go along.

Happy Birthday Chris! (It was my 56th yesterday :) )

Forgot to add to my report yesterday (think I was just to excited about my first fun snow run!) that I also did about 2 hours of upper body & core workout (splitting firewood) and it was also my first of 3 nightshifts so I did some stairs last night, 84 floors up / 98 floors down throughout the course of the night. Thats pretty close to record for me, but I'm going to try to break that tonight. Didn't get my run in this afternoon, overslept, so hopefully I'll have extra energy for some stairs. Might run tomorrow, suppose to be warmer at 56ºF but showers likely in the afternoon so not sure.

Happy birthday, Chris.

I made the main goal today, and came up short of the stretch goals, but overall I'm very happy. I ran barefoot and completed the half-marathon in 1:58:18, besting my 2007 PR by 18:07.

The biggest difficulty is that the Philly Marathon has become so much bigger, a lot more runners. Even with the wave start, I spent so much time navigating my way through the people I passed. Lots of surging and slowing down. In spite of that, I managed pretty even splits if you take the hills at miles 8 and 10 into account.

My legs will be sore tomorrow. I might have been able to squeeze a little more out of them, but not much more, so I'm fairly happy and satisfied. Best race of my life, beat the heck out of the old standards of the 2007 half-marathon and the 2008 Broad Street Run.

I guess also along the way I beat my PRs in the 4-mile, 5-mile, 10K and 10-mile. Not a bad effort.

I will eventually write a more detailed post.

Well done Scratch!

Thank you. It's a terrific course, but wow it has become so crowded. It seemed like the whole race I had to think about how do I get around that next runner or through those runners. That was the most stressful part of things. The water stops were clusterf's, but I did take water at one because the mouth was dry which was because my blood sugars had gotten a bit high before the race and probably ran between 180 - 200 during the whole of it. If I could have had that about 40 mg/dL lower, I probably would have gone under 1:58:00 and might have gotten that one stretch goal of better than 9:00 min/mile pace.

Still I guess maybe I can look at it and think some that I had to run maybe a fair bit more than 13.1 miles because of all the navigation. There was no way you could run straight line or good tangents in that crowd. You just had to keep picking your way and spots.

Happy birthday Paul and Chris.
Another Most excellent 18.5 mile run at 8:00am 57 deg. 94 % rh
Lots of water fowl at the creek crossings.
Last run of the week for me. Total miles 36.75 (5 shod)

Feet Good
Legs Good
Taper starts next week for December 14 marathon. (I do a conservative schedule)

Nice job Scratch! I hear ya about the crowd. I run some nice small country races and also some big ones in the city. I think my smallest race was a 5k with 7 of us. I like the small races, but I like the occasional big race too. Sure, its more of a pain getting stuck or having to dart about to get around people but its a neat experience. Usually much bigger crowds cheering and entertainment and stuff too. Its nice to experience both I think. Just don't expect to enter in the big city race and not be crowded!

Happy tapering Runlite!

As for myself lets see... Yesterday night I did 98 flights of stairs. I think that might be a record, but no matter since I am going to try to break 100 flights tonight.

Got a nice run in today too. I'd been taking it easy after my marathon, letting the achilles heal, and just started getting back to my normal mileages. 8mi today, longest since the race. The achilles seems ok now where it attaches to the heel, but I still get occasional tightness up higher... in the lower part of the calf. So not saying I'm 100% yet. But the lower calf tightness in my right leg is something that I had off and a lot of this year. Still going to wait a week around this level before trying a shorter long run. It was so nice to run in shorts today... was in the 50's out, think it hit 60º around the time I ran. Really gloomy though, but the warmth made up for it for once. Quite possibly the last shorts run until Spring, but I'll take as many of these late season warm days as mother nature can give.
