So I did run the half marathon last Sunday. Three years ago I did "run" the full marathon and it was such a terrible experince(got hipothermic)that I blocked out everthing so I went blind into the race, I couldn't remember whether the race was barefoot friendly or not. The weather was beautigul this time around it was in the low 50's at the start and clear and sunny-perfect!
So the race started right at 7:30 AM and here we go the first bridge crossing over the Mississippi, oh, oh this is not good very rough surface and not only that it was covered with lots of gravel, I was just hoping that this was the worst.
Not so quick! the entire route was just awful , all of it! Sometimes we say the route is for the most part good with few rough stretches here and there, not this one though, this was was all rough with little stretches and when I said litlle I mean about 20 ft of half decent surface.
Most of the race was done on a bike path that is being resurface so there was lots of broken pavement, the bike route itself is one of the toughest surfaces I have ever encounter.
There was this crossing that I have no idea what it was, bridge support? the river was under and the bridge above so we were sandwiched in between and let me tell you this was the worst yet, it was all metal waffle like but the square were open so sometimes the heel will land on the empty square and sometimes the ball of the feet did, they did lay out a piece of mat over it but it was still painful to run over it:barefoot:
So anyways, I had lots of fun none the less but I am never going to do this race BF ever again-EVER.
I really love this race the views of the Mississippi makes all worth it. Most of the course is along or over the Mississippi.
Lots of comments after the race all very possitive I must say I could go into details but I don't have time right now.
My time was 1:56:37 and I got a third place trophy for my age group. Not too bad for the conditions.
The pictures are up but can't post any, I have to buy them first:happy:

You still got an impressive time inspite of all the rough stuff. Hope your feet are okay!
Thanks Laura, after the race I looked at my feet to assessed the damage on my soles because I thought that for sure there were going to be some bruises and/or blisters and to my huge surprise my feet survived all that, there was nothing! they were just dirty and over stimulated but that was it. My feet felt great as soon as the race was over. So I was very happy about it:happy:

excellent!

Congrats Dama, well done.
Thanks dutchie, I had great support from my fellow racers but more importantly, I wanted to represent barefoot running well so that's why I hang in there.
I did have some sandals(flip-flops) stack on my waist cause I forgot to leave them in the gear check station but put them on during the race never crossed my mind, in fact, I forgot about them up untill the race was over.
Well done indeed!
Thanks my friend!

A little of both not much bf though. Thanks for asking! Glad to see your still out there kicking butt.
No matter if is BF or not as long you're outhere on the road.
I don't know about kicking butt but it's fun to come on the top three when not expecting to.

i have a friend who is originally from the quad cities and was/is quite the serious cyclist (e.g., a national team contender type). after reading your post, he said that, yeah, the roads are really bad and were really hard on his bicycles.

so you get "mad props" as we used to say when we were kids.

Ha! now you believe me!
Thanks, where are you located?

hey, i believed you. it just forces you to run properly and demonstrates your prowess. i told my friend about your experience because he was going to drag me out there for the marathon until he got a new nights & weekends job so he couldn't make it.

as to location, i am an east-central illinois guy.

That's too bad you couldn't make it. It is a nice race flat and fast but not for barefooting it.
Are you running it next year?

Hi Dama, I have shared your report on the home page. Thanks!
