Mileage Reporting 34th Week 2014

@Laura - nice run! Any details?

It was all barefoot, but just around my familiar .93 mile pond loop. The first 10 miles were with my youngest daughter at a comfortable 10 - 10:15 mm pace. Around mile 15 I could feel myself slowing down gradually every mile, until mile 20 was almost 11:30, but my audio book ended and I put on some dance music and felt up to revving it up some and was pleased to see I could still comfortably work up a 9:44 mm pace after that many miles. This time. I don't think I could have done it on previous long runs when the distance was so new to me. Then my Garmin completely ran out of battery, and I don't think I finished mile 22 quite that fast, but it was strong and, as I said, encouraging. I felt like if I had another 4 miles to go, I could have managed it, but with everything going on here with my mom so sick, it seemed best to leave it at that. Thanks for asking. :barefoot:

Current report:

Thursday - spin bike 60 minutes in AM, swim in evening of 10 minute intervals x3, so 30 minutes of swimming.

Friday - 10 miles at very comfortable approx. 11 mm pace. 3 miles included all three youngest daughters, all of us barefoot going around the pond loop. I don't think there have been that many of us barefoot all at once there, but everyone is getting to know us so well, they just encouraged us in our running. One daughter ran the whole 10 miles with me. She was laughing, saying how she's going to go back to work and be asked about her weekend, and when she says she had fun running 10 miles with her mother, everyone will just get this uncomprehending look, because whose mother runs 10 miles?!:p

Saturday - 5 miles with medical tape on ball of one foot to cover a slight flesh wound. After hubby chose to watch a movie about Steve Prefontaine last night, I was inspired to my old roots of sprinting, which I accommodated by doing mile intervals. That is, miles 2 and 4 were on the fast side, but I would like to emphasize that I still made it a priority to run lightly and never push the speed so that my form was struggling because I was ragged. It all felt lovely with splits of
10:02
8:44
9:44
8:20
9:59

That makes 44 miles for the week for me, another new, slightly higher milestone for me. Should still be able to get a short swim in this afternoon. Then, rest day on Sunday to prepare for 24 miles on Monday! Yikes!

I like this route quite a bit because it's so easy to see the distance you ran. So there's a real feeling of accomplishment at the end. I drive down to the river, park the car, and then I don't have to think about traffic or crossing streets the whole time I'm running. It's also interesting because I expose a lot of fellow recreationalists to barefoot running when I'm out on the river parkway's bike/pedestrian paths.

Very lovely photos!

Arrived at my hotel about 1 hour and 45 minutes later, and with my first few steps after taking the backpack of I felt like I would spring through the ceiling, took a few minutes before everything felt normal again. Makes me think there is something to be said for walking with a weighted vest. Thanks for the idea Sid. :)

I do remember that feeling when back packing with my family as a kid!

Awesome Job Happy!
22 miles, wow, very inspiring.
I think you are totally ready for 26.2

Thanks! I am finally feeling more ready, or at least like I will be able to finish and have that sense of accomplishment. And, I'm enjoying the long runs more. I don't think I am going to want to give them up!

At the moment, I focus on trying to run light enough so I don't hear my footsteps and run relaxed as I tend to tense up while running.
Just want to encourage you in this - speed comes more easily with light and relaxed anyway.

For you who have had runners knee issues: Running uphill is no problem, running downhill is.. any advise on progressing with that?
I agree with Rick. I find that when running downhill I need to think more about keeping it light, and really avoid "landing" with the pull of gravity. For me, this means shorter steps, more bending of knees, and giving up the idea of "flying" down the hill. I think in the end, I can still take advantage of the downhill flow, but not the way people in shoes think they are.

Long slow run today at Rabbit Hill park...wanted to do at least 15 miles but I started a bit too late as it heated up into the mid 80's degree F after about 10 miles. Nice run still...feet were good and didn't really get tired but the temp/humidity was getting annoying so stopped at 5 laps for 13 miles.

For the week had 4 shorts runs plus today's long run for 28 miles total.

5 mile run on my "hilly route" on a cool drizzly/misty morning. The picture shows some of the up and down, not much but as close to running hills in Winnipeg as I can get. I noticed today that my form is still improving, as I was running I noticed that I have very little up and down movement of my head. Just a little right to left that was due to my arm swing. There is hope for me yet. :) photo.JPG

Walked around the Minnesota State Fair yesterday, and then home, with the family, the kids in a tandem stroller. It's always fun to see the fairgrounds where I run so much in the winter transformed into a sweaty, swarming throng smelling of deep fried food. Had two servings of deep-fried cajun pickles with my local Fulton Sweet-Child-of-Vine IPA.

Just 12 miles on the week. A step backwards. Will try to get in a good run in a bit to start the week off right.

I don't think that anyone expects our troops to be deployed barefoot or with thinsoled minshoes. ;)

Ha, you know he was talking about training smart aleck.

Although, seriously, as Mokaman says, it's amazing some of the boots the military makes its soldiers wear.

Very lovely photos!
Thanks, I should bring a real camera. My phone's camera only takes good photos in ideal conditions. I'll take some more when the leaves start to change in a few weeks (what? just a few weeks left of summer?)

Your running is going fantastically, by the way. With your excellent training, I think the marathon will be very smooth and enjoyable for you. Congratulations!

Not too much to report this week, I got a pretty bad bone bruise in my left heel during last week's 20 miler. Apperently these things take 6-8 weeks to heal....yikes!

I am convinced that if I had been running skin to ground, instead of in thin sandals, i would not have bruised the bone on those pointy rocks....plus it was after dark and I could not see well.

My instincts told me to not run through the pain like I normally might, so I laid off all week.

I am gunna try a nice and easy 10k run later today, after being encouraged by a mile run with the dog this morning.

Just have to be very alert and carefull.

No chance I am taking 6 weeks off lol

Haha, had a funny moment

I accidently grabbed the cayenne pepper from the spice rack instead of the cinnamon for my protein shake...that was an interesting protein shake lol

Most excellent 10 mile run at 5:00 am, 81 deg. f., 62% rh.
Felt real smooth today.
The last mile I located a piece of metal imbedded in some tar in the middle of the road that gave me a slight cut in the ball of my left foot.
This will cause me to do band aids and KT tape (on future runs) to keep the cut clean till it heals.:(

I ran the longest I have ran in like a year. This running by "feel" thing really works for running longer. How weird! Just like me! :) I am pretty excited because I got some energy work done that is eradicating my bodily "glitches" -which is making for even more enjoyable runs!

Had a good run today, the heel still hurts, but not too badly, and it actually helped my form...

As an aside, that 20 miler, plus the good solid rest due to the heel injury, seems to have combined to make me much stronger.

Its weird, my body always seemed to get stronger via high reps instead of low reps and high weight....never had a muscle biopsy, but I'd guess there is a high percentage of slow twitch in there.

Felt so strong today that the heel pain didn't mean much....I was gliding man.

I'm trying to determine my "sustainable milage" on asphalt, the distance my feet can run everyday without feeling exhausted

it is more than 12 km,
it is less than 16 km
I'm gonna start the week with 14

3 months ago it was only 10 km !!!
