Mileage reporting 28th week of 2014

4km as the sun went down on the roughest Tarmac path ever! Very slow. Ouch!

Well, I ended up taking 3 days off this week with just some running drills...

So I needed a hard workout today to ease the guilt...just kidding, no guilt, just wanted to push hard :)

So I ran a sub 4 minute mile...yeah, thats right, this 243 pound 44 year old guy ran a sub 4 minute mile today...BOOM!

LoL

(Did I forget to mention that I did it in 16 X 100 meter interval sprints?) hehehe

3.73 miles total...was a crazy workout for me...the last 4 sprints were tough to get started on.

Was a track workout shod for the two miles of sprint intervals, barefoot the rest...sprinted the straights and jogged the curves.

Was fun but very difficult mentally and physically.

Hi Spider...are you properly hydrated?

Good point ! Thanks, but I hydrate the same as when it is warmer weather

The only explanation I can find, is that I got a blocked nose, maybe my breathing is a little harder (even though I breath mostly through my mouth)

Interval training this morning, did 9x300m at 90% maxHR. Going up (HR) was easy, but bring it down (to about 75% maxHR) during the slowing down phases was much harder, probably for the reasons mentioned in my previous post :)

A total of 12.7km/7.9mi, and as usual, the cold (but nice and sunny) Sydney weather continues (about 10C/50F early morning)

You need 9.34 more meters for that mile.

4.54 recovery miles today. Legs were still feeling beat up from the physical labor on Wednesday.

Yesterday - 45 minutes on spin bike. Couldn't fit in the swim due to cement sidewalk being put in around pool.
Today - 4 miles barefoot, pace varied, had youngest daughter along to chat with
- about 1.5 hours medium intensity weeding
- just finished 10 + 20 minutes of swimming

Great 5 mile run at 5:00 am.
I saw some lighting bugs and rabbits.
I am still working on relaxing my calf's, feet, toes, ankles and shoulders.
I seem to recover much better if I can relax.

Woot!...When I got on the scale this morning I was pretty happy...I broke the 20 pound mark...when I started running around 3 months or so ago, I weighed around 262...this morning I weighed in at 241, pretty stoked about that.

I did about 1.5 miles yesterday, was a recovery day, so just some form drills and a trip around the block...was a bit sore but got in a good light feeling sprint for the last 150 meters or so.

Haven't decided what kinda run to do today yet.

Have a great weekend everyone!

6 miles barefoot this morning. Where are the females on this thread? I need some moral support! I was unreasonably exhausted last night, went to bed a bit early, was discouraged to feel so tired, only to discover this morning that my "time of life" is screwing with my hormonal cycles. Two weeks. I tried to keep my run this morning relaxed. I thought I would feel better with a slow run than not at all. The pace didn't end up too bad in spite of the fatigue and mild cramps. This could really make marathon training a challenge...:(

Well I doubt I'll do any more running this week so I'll make my summation now...

Mon - 4.8mi just an easy run

Tues - 3mi wanted to keep it low since I was planning on a long run the next day, and havent done many back to back days ever. Actually it may be the first time ever doing 3 in a row, so kind of a test.

Wed - long run of 18 miles with about 1/2 mile more walk at the end. Was a beautiful day to run and it felt great, but I did have a tiny bit of straining where the achilles attached to back of heel, possibly from the 3 days in a row that I was not used too. After I started walking the end, it seem to spread underfoot into a slight tightness/cramping in my arch and going up under a couple toes. I hope this goes away, reminds me of the calf and foot cramps I had early on this year that took me out of commission. Ran this one with Yvonne, her longest run yet! And my longest of the year so far.

Thur - .5mi super easy jog just to stretch out the legs a bit and warmup for weight training.

Fri - was thinking about another shorty just to keep up my streak, but my drive home from work curtailed any hopes of doing anything last night... now I have a pretty long commute of 40 miles each way, and can normally do it in 40-50 minutes but I think I set a record last night. 2hr 45min drive home!!! Stop and go for miles on the highway. When I got home my left leg was trembling, and I don't think the clutch in the one-ton was too happy either. Got up at 4am for work, home at 8:45pm from work. :dead: I think I'm going to need tonight to recover from that lol. And tomorrow was going to see a movie after work. So week total miles probably going to be 26.8 cant believe with my record long run this year I still didnt break 30 this week. :sorry:

Just like Tristen I'll do a week post. It consisted of running a couple miles here, a 4 miler there, and a couple 3 milers were in there as well. Yesterday a 3-4 mile walk golfing. Today it was a 6 miler followed up with a 2 mile or so dog walk. Trying to do some tempo pace running at the last 1/2 mile of my runs just to keep my form honest.

Week 3 in Germany. 66 miles (9 barefoot). Weather put a damper on this week with rainy conditions. Got caught one day on a ridge with lightning and hail. Finished the trip off with a 34 mile run. Not too technical but did have two big climbs. Soaking wet for the last 5 hours, but still enjoyed the run looking at th scenery. 31 miles in 5:45 which is an unofficial PR. Returning home tomorrow. A great vacation.

10.46 miles this morning, came to an end shorter than what I would have liked because apparently my blood pressure dropped rather low. It felt like a bonk began to happen around mile 9, but the blood sugar was okay. It wasn't until I finished walking the last half-mile home that I checked the blood pressure and it was borderline low then, and I suppose maybe had been even lower during what felt like a bonk. Through about 8 miles I had been feeling pretty good and had thought I might do up around 13 miles for today.

16.2km / 10 miles this morning. Started out on the beach, but the tide was up and I had to do the last half on the streets. The sun was out, but it was very cold, so most of the time I was trying to find the sunny side of the street. I noticed a few drivers passing by get that funny look when they go from incredulous to a big grin. I also saw another barefoot guy going the other way, I said g'day and got a thumbs up in return.

Here I am! I'm not on oral contraceptives, and I am in pre-menopause (not peri, which is the two years before menopause) and my period likes to come whenever it wants, within about a 7 day time span, and sometimes it likes to play tricks on me and drag on forever and ever. Sometimes the cramps almost kill me, other times not so much. The energy thing is a definite factor - and on "that day" - I just crawl into bed and do nothing. The SUCKIEST part of all, is women's cycles actually SHORTEN throughout menopause. I always assumed they lengthened. Yikes. Mine is doing exactly that, it used to be a four week cycle, it is now a three-ISH week cycle. One time a couple of years ago, it started doing something my ND called "fore-shortening". It was four weeks one month, the next month three weeks, the next month two weeks -at which time I went to my ND and said -WTF? I don't want to be having a period EVERY day for the rest of my life, which is right where I was headed. He was also an acupunturist and did one treatment on me that reset the whole thing back to a four week cycle, and that held for quite a long time. Unfortunately he died. :( No acupuncturist has been able to do that since. Thank god it has never gone back to fore-shortening, yet...

Like those in menopause, the biggest problem is, knowing where I am REALLY at in my cycle. But there ARE ways to know, using various body measurements, similar to what women measure in what was formerly called the "rhythm method" and what people who have irregular cycles use, to get pregnant. I am too lazy to do them now, but when I get serious about training, and especially as I get older and my body becomes more irregular, it will become a MUST to take these measurements daily and chart them.

As of late, I have begun to research exercise plans that revolve around one's cycle and have found that there is a lot of useful information out there, but I have not had a chance to sort through credible vs. non-credible sources, yet. I "thought" I knew what bodily changes occur throughout ones' cycle pretty well, but I was WRONG - I only understood them in relation to pregnancy. Understanding these changes in relation to exercise is turning out to be WAY more complex than I thought it was. Most surprising (and annoying) is that it is necessary to follow a plan that alters EVERY SINGLE WEEK throughout the cycle -and this includes exercise AND diet. But, it is necessary to do this to reap the biggest rewards and achieve your training goals.

As I research this, I will let you know what I find.

I HAVE learned one EXTREMELY important bit of information that I tell all my female running friends about - and it is the hormone Relaxin and it's role on the "weakening" of ligaments, during ones' cycle. Here is an article about it - skip down a couple paragraphs to see what I am talking about:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-relaxin.htm

I had one friend run her first marathon while menstruating and she incurred hip injuries that it took her literally years to recover from - and I am convinced that is why. She is re-training now and I "reminded" her about this - and like lots of highly competitive females, she said, "I'm not going to pass on a race that I spent four months training for, just because my period started", to which I "gently" reminded her that the cost of forfeiting a race, is far less expensive than dealing with an injury that you will likely pay for, for the rest of your life." To which, she blew me off again, attempting ridiculous justifications such as, "you are more likely to incur damage from dehydration during a race than from your hormones" -this is assanine and she knows it!

There IS a compromise to this dilemma - which I told her about. You sign up for TWO marathons one or two weeks apart from each other. People are always desperate to get into large competitive races -especially marathons- so you will most likely recoup the extra money you paid. And if you don't - you still only have one body...it's a small price to pay in the bigger picture.

When I run my first ultra, some time before I die, I AM going to sign up for two. Problem solved.

Here I am!

That was all very helpful to my problem solving process. Thank you. I don't think there are enough marathons close to me to sign up for two, and with the timing being so uncertain, it is not worth the expense and trouble of travel plans to go to one, but I will look around if I end up out of the first one. Meanwhile, I will take satisfaction in that I am going to be trained for it, whether or not I can do it on the scheduled day of the race. :)
