Trail Shoe Suggestions?

Hi everyone, I am looking for a trail shoe and I was hoping some of you all might have some suggestions. I am looking for a zero drop/near zero drop shoe that is fairly wide, not just in the forefoot but throughout the midfoot as well. I run in my Luna Monos all the time and have not found gravel or rocks that I could not run with that level of firmness and thickness (although I would like the protection of a shoe for the upper part of my feet). I also run a mix of road an trail so I prefer a hybridesque type of shoe that is suited for both. Right now the two shoes that I am looking into are the Altra Superior and the Topo MT. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Altra lone peak, version 1.5 or 2.0 should fit the bill. Wider through the full fit than the superior, but it is a little heavier and stiffer. I've run a couple trail half marathons in them and they held up great.

Ya I had looked at that shoe, but with it's 23mm total stack height it's possibly a bit much for my type of running. Also, I am concerned about those lugs for the bits of road that I run on to get to the trails here (from the house it's 4 miles just to get to the trails). They appear like they might wear fairly quickly.... It is a bit heavy, but really trail shoes for the most part don't really get much lighter, maybe an ounce or so per shoe.

I had forgotten to mention that I had been looking at the new New Balance Minimus Trail Zero V2 as well, but that one is more geared for trail and with that long of a run on roads for me to get to the trails it makes me hesitate due to wear on the lugs. Decisions decisions....

Hi Nick,

I've just tried Vivobarefoot Trailfreak over two runs of 17k, one as training and the second in race last sunday.
It's quite wide on forfoot as well as midfoot, quicklace system grants good and fine tuned adjustment.
Good qrip on every terrain and too bad on road even if not really dedicated to this special use.
Zero drop, removable insole to add/remove cushion, lightweght (for trail shoe)...

Hope this helps...
Good luck for your "shoequest":D

I was also looking today at the new balance mt 1010 v2. It looks like it might fit the bill for me. The last appears to be the same as a shoe I know that fits me already, kind of. The plus is that the 1010v2 also comes in a wide size. Gonna try to get down to new balance this afternoon and see if I can try this and any other trail shoe they might have. I know a lot of minimalists aren't happy that new balance scrapped the minimus footshaped last, but I am because I never fit that last, even in the EE and EEEE versions. Anyhow, I'll let you all know what I think.

Surprise surprise it was none of these that I liked. It turns out what fit the best was an EEEE New Balance 810 v3 Trail shoe. Only 4 mm of drop and to be absolutely honest, I dont know if I've ever had a shoe fit so well. Time will tell what I really think so I guess we'll see.
