Mileage Reporting 43rd Week 2013

Yeah it's a bit of a drag, but worth the marathon experience. It's the only time I get strict with a training plan is when I run a marathon, I need some kind of planning structure. I want to do well and be prepared, nothing worse than being under-trained for a marathon. This most likely is my last marathon for a long time, or forever. Between family, kids, work the training takes a toll, at least for me it does.

I love half marathons, just a perfect distance! I pretty much stay in half marathon shape all year around, much easier to do than a marathon, plus you can sign up for one at the last minute and feel ready for it. I have about 4 lined up for 2014 already. As far as the winter challenge it's there for the fun of it.
Yah, agreed. Half marathons seem like a good distance. Challenging, but no special training is required once you get into decent running shape; it's basically just your weekend long run, plus or minus a mile or two.

Still not sure about races in general though. I mostly like heading out alone with no pressure to run particularly fast. Some days I feel it, and push the pace, other days I just coast. It would suck to have to run fast on one of those days when you feel like coasting.

Like you, I flirt with a purely 'just run' approach from time to time, but often find myself retreating to a more numerological stance. It'd be nice to get the numbers out of my head once and for all, to the point where I could just head out without even knowing what my route distance would be. That's the way I used to run.

I know the Winter Challenge is just for kicks and giggles, but if I were to sign up, then it'd influence route choices, time of day I run, and I'd have to keep track of when I put on back-up shoes on those runs where conditions turn out to be less favorable that they seemed initially. This coming winter, in borderline conditions, I also want to experiment with running the first mile or so shod, until the running metabolism kicks in, and then go bare for however long I can. If I were participating in the Winter Challenge, I would probably want to start out bare right from the start. Basically, I need to protect myself from my own OCD tendencies.

Yeah, I think 10 miles to half-marathon is a great distance. Long enough to feel like you've run a good ways but it's not going to beat you up too much, the way marathons can possibly beat you up especially if undertrained. And it beats the hell out of 5Ks if you're really racing a 5K hard, there is so much suck in the last mile of a 5K done hard.

I plan to do a 5K Sunday morning. It's going to be chilly, maybe upper 30s around start time. I will take the Xeros in case I feel the need for some insulation. Not sure if I will. Last Saturday I did that crosscountry hike and it was about mid 40s to start and walking over wet grass and ground. My feet did fine there, a little chilly at first, but they stayed warm as I kept moving. Still won't really be racing the 5K on Sunday, start it off easy enough, pick it up some after mile 1 and then try to pick it up again for the final mile and a tenth.

More and more, I think there's such a thing as underuse injuries. Since I've begun doing my little daily run commutes, I seem to recover faster from my long runs, and don't stiffen up as much. You might consider trying to run a mile on your off-days, as I think both you and Dutchie have suggested in the past. I don't know if the micro runs really contribute to running fitness, but they do seem to help maintain skeletal-muscular conditioning in the limbs and joints.
I'm thinking you may be right Lee. I really want to get back to running like I would like to, and hopefully here in the near future I can start running more frequently. I think while my Army buddy was here I was pushing the pace to often which contributed to me getting the trigger points in my shin(s). Once I get the left side fixed I may try doing the 5 day run week again. I have a great little 1 mile loop that I can do and then also add the .3 miles farther so I can take my boy to the park and let him play. I am really wanting to start running in my sandals again, but I really want a leather footbed as the MGT footbed blisters my soles when running more than 4'ish miles. Maybe I will glue down a leather footbed over the top of the MGT as I can't afford to order brand new sandals.

No running yesterday as I was painting our bathroom - barefoot. Not being the world's neatest painter I managed to send the odd dollop to the ground where I promptly stood in them.

Fast forward to this afternoon and I celebrated the completion of the task with a 13 mile run on a cool and windy afternoon. I guess I was running fairly well as most of the paint is still under my feet so I'm going to have to scrub them in a few minutes!

3.65 miles in a cool breeze. I had to wrestle with myself, but finally on the way home I got it in my head it would be best to run cuz it would help clear the head. Sure enough, after about 8 minutes of running I already felt better. Pretty much coasted it, though starting at the 10 minute mark I began 30s strides with 1.5 min recoveries between, and did 6 of those, then coasted it back to super easy to bring it home.

Ready for the Monster Dash Half Marathon in St. Paul, Minnesota tomorrow morning. This is my best chance this year of a PR in a half marathon. Weather forecast is improving. Earlier this week, the forecast was for 29 F at the start of the race. Now it may be in the upper 30s. The hardest part will be the waiting at the start. I may put on a pair of cheap socks I can remove before the race starts.

4 mile run at 4:45 am., 55 deg., 62%rh . great weather cool breeze. this run felt great

Did not get any running in the last two evenings. Did get a run in this evening after mowing the yard. Legs a bit tired but feet good. Ran 9.5 miles.

The masticating juicer I ordered came today so my wife and I started juicing everything in site. Juiced a pomegranate, apples, oranges, some pineapple, and a lemon. The apple was amazingly sweet. They were Fuji apples. Gonna have fun making delicious stuff with this from now on. Going to try some greens tomorrow. Bet they wont be too tasty unless sweetened with fruit. Anyone have any favorite juicing recipes?

Today was slotted as rest..... But..... I got my first pair of VFF in the mail. Had to go knock out 2 miles... fun, fast... but slight ache between toes and meta's.

Ya, careful with those things -that's the only time I ever got an injury. Mine are now HEAVILY modified - (mine are bikilas) I cut off all support around the sides, back, and top, and I even cut off the toes, lol!

she was amazed that i wasn't even screaming as she said she would've been crying from the graston. felt good to me.

i'm going to see her as much as i can to get my body straight. it's been getting worse and my constant running will only make my imbalances worse.

Your pain tolerance is undoubtedly built up from all of the incredible pain I used to inflict upon you when I first started learning how to work out trigger points - most of which you have probably repressed. Lol! :D

You NEED to get a shoe lift for your short side, like I told you to do!!! Please don't make me flog you!!! :nailbiting: And wear it ANY TIME YOU ARE NOT RUNNING (unless it's going to be a long, flat-surface run) -that includes wearing it any time you are using both legs while doing any kind of weightlifting (even if it's your own body weight). In your case, since you said it is from a hip imbalance (and one leg is not truly shorter) then you can use just a heel lift, on your short side.

You can get something like this, below, on amazon -just look up "heel lift".

Sometimes the tunes of the week spill over into other time periods and I have to sing them as they are. You will have to accept me as I am or skip my posts. ;-)

And Mike actually put last Sunday's race mileage in the WRONG WEEK, himself, but I WON'T GIDDILY POINT THAT OUT!!! :D

1.6 miles this morning, went fast but not hard, in the Xeros. Temp was about 35 degrees and it tells me that the Xeros are enough insulation if it's low to mid 30s tomorrow for the 5K. If it's upper 30s, and judging by how my feet did while walking around moving some firewood over asphalt and wet grass, I think I can run the 5K barefoot. We'll just have to see how the weather goes.

Friday: 30 minutes of swimming
Later into the night and transitioning into Saturday AM..., dancing barefoot for a couple of hours. This will have to count as my run today. If I had run, I might have broken 30 miles/week for the first time, but I won't give up a night of dancing.

no i didn't. like one half i register from monday to sunday. the other half does sunday to saturday.
i'm also not wearing a heel lift. my difference is from muscle, not structure.

ya i did grow up in a different household than all of you. - captain obvious.

walked about a mile with the dogs and let them play at the park. my intern is really focusing on my legs and i'm noticing a difference. one taught me a stretch. crack. contract release antagonist contract. maybe i spelled it wrong. i at least remember that part. he did it to my legs and taught me how to do it myself.

Laura, complaining just gets you knuggies when no one is looking.

Nick, any way you may wanna sell those to me? i was looking at some mgt but $65? man.

it is true.under use injuries do exist. use it or lose it. exercise lubricates the joints. just remember too much of anything is a bad thing. it's all about balance.

Apparently, I will have to sic the dog on you. She is very protective of me. If I have to resort to it, thereThe Bodyguard.jpg is also my personal bodyguard. And he is faster than you.. ;)
