Hello from Cape Town, South Africa!

A casual runner who enjoys running the various road races each weekend, I was struck with a horrible back injury. Last year, I finished a half marathon in tears; agony from my back.

I expected my running "career" to be over. Chiropractors, physios, acupuncture and meds and I was slowly on the mend. During this time I started doing research and found barefoot running might be my last shot at running.

A year to the day that I finished that 21km in tears, I finished my first full marathon in my Vibram FiveFingers!

Not only am I a runner now, but a fully fledged barefoot runner!

I run in VFF Bikila and KMD LS on the road and Xero Shoes.

Welcome Claire it's nice to have you with us and congratulations on your marathon race!
I really hate to be the one asking you this but are you running barefoot with nothing on you feet? as in skin to ground?
Congrats if you're but if you're running in Vibram Five Fingers then it is not barefoot running they are a better option than traditional running shoes though.
Sorry, don't hate me:sorry:

Thanks guys! It's wonderful to be here and to be a "free" runner. Great to see all the inspiration on this forum too.
And fear not Barefoot Dama, I'm getting closer and closer to the ground!

Alright then! Keep it up!

Do tell us more...
My husband and I made a trip to Zambia to work in an orphanage on a remote ranch near Livingstone a few years ago. The extent of my international travel had been over the border to Mexico in a car. I don't think he had started traveling internationally for business reasons by then, but he was more familiar with airports than I was, since his dad worked for United all his life. Well, our plane was verynlate getting into J-burg. We had about 10 minutes to collect our luggage, make it through customs, and board the other plane. This was a small plane that I think made the flight into Livingstone "periodically..." We had been extensively warned about J-burg, told not to trust anyone, and DO NOT leave the airport. The minute we stepped off the plane, someone did show us the way to customs, but once through there we were lost. A porter of some sort recognized our potentiel as clients and sais he would show us the way for $10 US. My husband only hesitated for a moment, then, to my consternation, let the fellow take my luggage and lead the way. To say I had trouble following him, basically runnng, in the crowd AND not getting separated from my husband is an understatement. He, however, not only got us to the right place, but took us to the front of the check in line to explain to that clerk what our situation was. He seemed extremely pleased when we handed him his money, and a few people told us we "overpaid" him quite a bit. I say that was one of the best $10 we ever spent!

Awesome though. How long did you stay at the orphanage?

Ah, yes. Jo'burg airport! I'm not a fan but unfortunately it's an African hub so we often have to stopover there. Well done on keeping your wits about you and getting through. Please don't judge SA but the airport though (which I can confirm has indeed improved).

Do come to Cape Town - it's wonderful and after years of travelling I am even more proud of this city. Also, it's great for running. Coastal roads and mountains everywhere!

Hope to welcome you here soon!
