Winter Challenge - 2012

Hey Bernd, whereabouts in Minnesota are you? I'm in St. Paul, close to 280. Maybe we could go on a weekend run sometime if you're not too far away.
I'm in the western suburbs on Lake Minnetonka (Spring Park). And yes, we should do that.. But keep in mind I just started with my cold weather bf run being my 2nd bf run so far. Maybe 6 more runs in my Feelmax, nothing more than 2.5 miles
Funny, I didn't even notice you are from MN...:)

OK, well, just let me know when you're up for it. Minnetonka is a bit of a drive for me, but if I could combine it with taking the family to a picnic spot nearby, it might be doable--I could sneak away for 30-40 minutes. Or if you're in town, we could go for a run down by the river. Just let me know. If not this year, then next year there'll be plenty of opportunities. Happy Trails!

Yah, you know I was just giving you guys sh!t. As Bernd can attest, we Minnesotans are the Canadians of the US. In fact, Minnesota gets a bit colder than many of your populations centers, like Toronto and Vancouver. We get that Arctic spike from Winterpeg. And 20-23 °F and above is within my comfort zone, on smooth dry asphalt anyway. Actually, my BFR temperature index is kind of like this:

10-20 - numb and dumb
20-30 - tolerable
30-40 - fine
40-50 - comfortable
50-60 - perfect
60-70 - almost perfect
70-80 - starting to work up a sweat
80-90 - sweaty but fun
90-100 - tingles up and down my spine

I just thought it was funny to hear folks complain about not getting any cold runs in. Last winter 20 F was my limit, but we'll see if I can dip down into the teens a bit this winter. I may start off the really cold runs shod and then take off the Moc3s once I'm warmed up and see how far I can go BF. But the minute the feet start to numb up, the shoes are coming back on. And running shod is still a lot better than running on the dreadmill, I agree. Those things drive me nuts. One of the things I like best about running is that it gets me outside. Embrace the elements!

There you go again Bare ;), blaming the Artic Spike on us poor Winterpegger's. You do realize we are quite south right, relatively speaking.

Oh yeah, but I've heard the weather people describe this spike. Apparently it starts a bit west of you, comes down over the Dakotas, covers us and Wisconsin and then lifts back up, sparing a lot of Canadians further east. It's why we're colder than most people in Alaska living on the coast, and why International Falls in northern Minnesota has the coldest averages in the contiguous USofA.

Yup, it is really quite nasty really. I am hoping to get to International Falls this year for the Freeze Your Gizzard Run, it is a great party.

Got in a good 5 km barefoot this morning temps in the -14 range with the windchill, got lots of looks as I streaked barefoot through the 'Well-To-Do' Area of town. There was a lot of this :eek:

I'll add my voice to the chorus of those not getting cold-weather runs in because of the warm weather here in NW Pennsylvania.
The forecast for Thursday's Turkey Trot is sunny and mid-50's (F)! The last few years that race has usually been in the 30's with either icy cold rain or snow.

I don't know if I should be happy or disappointed. I was looking forward to putting in some Winter Challenge miles!

Wanna trade? Just did 2k in -6C on wet salted roads and what was not salted had frost on them and icy. Not fun but then what the heck, November here and any BF miles are just bonus.

Hmmm...maybe I should just be happy. We'll be getting that soon enough.
I try to never run on wet salted roads; that can really be miserable. I do a lot of my running at a State Park near here and they never salt the roads because it's a protected wildlife habitat. They usually just put down sand if it's icy, or nothing at all. I actually enjoy running on the packed snow if the air temp is above about 30F.

The streets by my house looked good this morning, just a little frost on them. But when I got to the more used section it was salted, sanded and wet. I was suffering from barefoot withdrawal so I just went as long as I could. When it is dry, I'm good down to -12C but wet, forget it. I am having a lot of trouble adjusting back into min shoes this fall for some reason, so the slightest window of opportunity and I have to go and try it. ;)

Some housekeeping:
@Bob - can you check the spreadsheet to verify your totals. I noticed that all but those in the +5 to 0 range had been deleted ... honest it wasn't me :D I copied your values from week 7 to the Enter Data sheet. So please make sure all your runs for this week are included.

@rick turner - can you add the total km you range in the 5 to 0 temperature range. You entered 5 runs ... maybe that was 1 run for 5km?

Next year I promise I'll use imperial units. Our American friends will be able to put their calculators away.

Good to go, I haven't had any BF runs this week yet, good temps but everything is way to wet around my neck of the woods.

I set my gps to metric. Had to explain the whys to friends down here (basically that I was too lazy to open the converter on my android).

3.48 miles / 5.6 km.;
26 F / -3 C;
8 F / -13 C windchill.

Woke up this morning to an inch of snow. It was great to come down later and witness my wife and kids' enthusiasm for the winter wonderland. By mid-afternoon I decided I needed to attempt a run on the way to running some errands picking up some pills for my dad and getting some steak for dinner. By that time there were some dry patches of asphalt in the middle of the roads, and I tried to stick to those as much as possible. The sidewalk felt noticeably colder and moisture for any sustained length had me thinking about slipping on my back-up Moc3s. But after about a mile and a half my foot's numbness stabilized just to the north of tolerable, so I stuck it out and had my first bone fide winter run. I took off my toe rings beforehand just in case they would conduct cold.

Sounds like a great run Lee. I know the feeling, your feet are cold but just tolerable and that feeling just stays with you. Just remember that if they were burning and tingling a little to much when you got back in the warmth you have come to the limit. Until then, keep pushing the limit, it is amazing how far off they can be. ;)
