Sesamoid pain?

I'm starting to experience some pain at the ball of my left foot at the 1st metatarsal. There seems to be a loose smooth calcification kind of close to the surface about 1/4" x 3/8" and maybe 1/8" thick. I don't believe it's the sesamoid bones because I can feel those on my right foot and they are very deep and feel kind of small (they're almost hard to detect). This is a big obvious floater in the pad of the foot.

The problem started about a year ago when I was training for my first barefoot marathon (which I did complete in March this year). It started out feeling like a blister which never really developed. I had my massage therapist look at it a while later and it had already started hardening. He tried and thought he broke it up enough but it was still there. It didn't bother me at the time so I didn't worry.

I'm running trails more now and did an 11 mile trail race and wore my VFF, the calcification moves when there is a load on it and it causes a hot spot in the shoe on the inside of my foot. It's also starting to bother me when I do lunges or mountian climbers and the big toe is pulled up. Occasionally it says hello when just standing. I'm thinking it might need to be surgically removed.

My chiropractor didn't examine it and told me I need to see a podiatrist. He thinks it started as scar tissue that then hardened into the calcification.

I'm live LA area and didn't see any Doctors listed in my area (hard to believe).

Thanks in advance for any help,
Jacobus

Hi Jacobus.

I commented briefly on your facebook post, but this additional information is helpful on which direction to take. I think at this point your next step needs to be some imaging, starting with x-ray. As to exactly what the floater is, that would be an exercise in guessing for now. It's too bad there isn't a BF friendly podiatrist on on our board that is close to you. Any podiatrist will be able to order the imaging though, you just might have to hear about how bad running barefoot is. :) Maybe it will give you a chance to educate someone!

Sorry I couldn't give you more info, but this is a pretty specific situation that is difficult to advise on over the internet.

Hi Andrew,
I saw a sign for a DPM yesterday that treats the local high school athletes so I'll give him a try next week. They do in house digital imaging for $35 I was told so that is very affordable. I'll keep you posted on the findings.

Thanks again,
Jacobus
