Mileage reporting 21st week 2014

My stubbed toe is a little swollen now, guess I didn't give it enough initial rest. Oh well. At least the ST is going well. Head cold still there, but a little better each day. Just need to sleep more. Maybe this weekend.
OH, and while you are at it, ask Bare Lee about the rowing MACHINE that he used to happily use and actually get some benefit from.
OK, there are machines and then there are machines. I use cable 'machines' (for pulldowns and seated rows, face pulls and pushdowns), which is basically what a rowing machine is, but they still allow for a natural ROM (provided one has proper technique of course). Nautilus-type machines often don't have a natural and full ROM, and worse, they isolate muscles that were never meant to work in isolation, like the quads in leg extension machines (in natural movements, the quads never do anything without the hamstrings). Nautilus machines were invented in the 70s/80s health club boom because (1) you can get more paying clients into the same space, and (2), you don't need to pay qualified instructors to teach proper technique, much as cushioned shoes obviate the need to learn running technique (until the repetitive stress injuries pop up of course). Both machines and cushy shoes came about when the masses entered the fitness fray en masse, many of them with little previous athletic experience or technique.

Anyway, I got bored of the rowing machine and gave it to my dad. If I were to use it again, it would either be for a five-minute warm-up, or some kind of HIIT at the end of a ST workout. Rowing at aerobic pace for 30-40 minutes gets pretty tedious when there's no body of water around.

BTW, I use a hyper bench for hyperextensions but they're still no match for deadlifts.

Get better! More sleep really does help.
Speaking of toes, I was out in the yard yesterday and saw blood between 2 toes. I could feel a very slight sting, but not even enough to be able to tell which toe it was! Still don't know!

Today - Mid-day run at local Alexander Park...never been there before so just exploring.

Ran about 2 miles gravel and 3 miles pavement around the Frisbee Golf course. Nice little park for beginner barefoot training...there is
pavement, grass and gravel side by side for about a mile loop nice for swerving between different surfaces which I
did the last mile as the pavement and gravel started burning my feet...it was in the 80'sF already by noon.

I see some barefoot frisbee golf here as a warmup before running in my future.

thursday: am 2.5, a very few weights before leaving with the kids for school.
evening swim, maybe 40 min
night: cupcake icing

friday: am 2.5, then about 1-1.5 with some walking on a paved trail, killing time waiting for a kid event, lunch: weights
later contemplating taking my birthday boy to one of those bouncy jungle gym places. That will count for something right? Maybe a sprain, if nothing else.

th-bike ride for an hour. also walked on my 20min break.
f-attempted to ride my bike to school. got on the sidewalk so the bus wouldn't run me over. my lunch bag flew out of my milk crate. i went back for it and could smell vinegar. the baby jar i had full of oil and vinegar broke that i was going to put on my spinach salad. well, i guess i still did it but with broken glass. the salad and dressing were mixed all inside my bag. i was only a minute from home so i walked back up the hill, washed my bag out, and drove to school. oh, i think i did well on my tests too.

5 km today with 2 running buddies, also 30 minutes walking on a gravel parking lot that was being used for a farmers market. Must have looked comical running today as 1 dog is about 80 lbs and the second would have weighed 10 lbs but she had a haircut this week so she was down to about 8 lbs. Felt good, kept my pace down to accommodate the little one, and we ran really early to escape the heat. We skipped spring and went straight into summer, +32C here in Winterpeg today. Yesterday was a 4 mile walk chasing golf ball from one side of the fairway to the other.

I ran a little over 13 miles this morning with 7 of them being a "meet-up" run with 2 others. One was Polish, living in Brooklyn, who started off in sneakers but ran the last four miles barefoot (he'd done 20 minutes barefoot before and our pace was around 10.30 m/m) and the other was a very cute Quebecoise who started in five fingers and said at the start she could never run "pieds nu" - she chose to run shoeless for the last 3/4 mile or so! I last saw her running joyfully down a hill heading to meet her mother on 5th Avenue to enjoy the rest of their weekend.

I got my Garmin Fenix2 yesterday, and it's awesome ! Went for my first run today, I was worried the display would be too small to read during the run, but it's fine, even when in the sun.

I have been running with Runkeeper for years now, and I moved all my yearly run to Garmin Connect. But I'll keep both sites for now.

I must say I like the Garmin website, it gives tons of info

I will add this to the Mike's Book of Stories that I'm going to write one day. Your grandchildren will be on the edge of their seats with this one!!! You must have told it to AT LEAST three other people by now, TWICE! :p

Friday - 4 mile barefoot run with hubby, who ran in squishy, old flat runnng shoes, then went barefoot about the last 1/4 mile. He usually runs back and forth during a run "with" me, but this time we were joined by a friendly, talkative man, so he didn't abandon me.

A fair amount of physical labor and time on my feet walking the rest of the day.

Saturday - about an hour's worth of volleyball at one son's birthday party. I shocked all the young college men with my skills, which can't help but be fun, but I especially like when my husband just smiles all proud of me, but like he expects it. Amazingly did not pull any muscles and avoided bruises from diving for the ball. All barefoot in the grass with a few sticker weeds that I never felt.

Was supposed to go dancing, but was too tired, but now I am going to be sad all week about missing it.

That 10K went great. I will write a race report too, just wanted to let you know that I didn't get a sun burn and I used just a little sunscreen on my shoulders and face. I completed the race in 1:17.56 and I'm proud of that. It was really nothing but steep hills up and down nonstop and the heat was incredible. I felt fine in the heat though. Had managed to drink enough and get the salt I needed. Afterwards my whole body felt tired but good. No issues with anything here afterwards. :D

Ran 6.8 miles yesterday and 4.25 this morning.

Also tried out the running kilt which arrived yesterday, and decided it was worth fussing around with the camera to document things.

I definitely like it. It feels better running in the kilt than it does in shorts, I think.

No running for me this weekend. Yesterday my family and I went around to visit family in their plots and to put flags and flowers for the vets of the family. We do this every year and it's kind of hard explaining to a 4 year old why. He just doesn't/can't understand yet. Today we are doing a big family lunch thing which will be nice. Oh, and I may have some new shoes to be testing out in the near future. They are Topo's, either the ST or the MT. I really want to try the MT because of them being a hybrid road/trail shoe, but their thickness is a bit off putting as I know if I get much thicker than my mono's my form goes to hell. The ST are extremely appealing to me because of the total stack height (12mm), weight, zero drop, and the price. Anyhow, hope you all have a good weekend and get lot's of running in. I am giving myself a mandatory 2 days off for rest, which is extremely difficult because I just want to run, all the time. It consumes me and my thoughts constantly.

Most excellent 10 mile run at 5:45 am., 73 deg. f., 78% rh..
Almost did not go out.
Did you guys ever have one of those times where you had a few issues but went out anyway?
I was very glad I did!!
Somewhere just past mile 3 I saw a long haired golden retriever with three legs bringing his owner the morning paper (I thought that was cool).
I saw quite a few ducks flying overhead, lots of rabbits, white swans, and I keep seeing these things flying around and I looked them up this week and they are called night hawks.
The night hawks fly like bats probably getting food.
This week I signed up for the wounded warrior 1/2 marathon in Irving TX. it is 6-8-2014.
I still love running barefoot.
Feet good.
legs good.

This happens to me sometimes. I find that if I think about relaxing, most of the time things resolve during the run nowadays.

4 miles today with my 4 legged running buddies. Good run, muggy but dry. It had rained earlier and there were lots of puddles to run through. One cyclist who passed me made the comment, "at least you don't have to worry about getting your shoes wet". Got asked early this morning to leave the clubhouse at the golf course because I was barefoot and it was a health rule. I told her there was no such rule and if there was could she show it to me. Of course she couldn't, then I commented that the only health code I could see that was being broken was that none of the kitchen staff were wearing hair nets. Of course I lost the argument anyway as the course had the right, to which I agreed and said that signage should be put up so that everyone would be aware of that fact, that for now I felt discriminated against. They have the right to refuse, but I have the right to spend my money on other more barefoot friendly golf courses. Made me grumpy for the rest of the morning, on top of that we got rained out after 9 holes.
