Nope this is the third installment of the challenge. 2011-2012 was the first year.

Just put in another 6km tonight at a balmy -4 degrees windchill. Yup it is windy out there. Snow is falling, just not enough to collect on the ground just yet.
Going to be soon though, very soon. :coldfeet:

TJ - 1st challenge was winter of 2010-11. In that one Smelph won, and we only counted runs below 32F.

I'm confused. Bob said no to 2010-2011, you say yes, it did happen. Is there an article that summarizes the challenge? I'd like to add it to the others for prosperity's sake.

My mistake, I had thought there was only the 2 previous. I remember writing up a report for one of them which must of been the first one. Have I really been doing this for 4 years? How time flies by.

I found the recap / report with a quick search, I hope I was able to copy the direct link, let's give it a go.

Thanks for finding this Bob.

3 challenges so far
2010 - USA won
2011 - Can won
2012 - USA won

Gee if I looked at your signatue Yow I would of seen that 2010 was clearly the first year. Serious Blonde moment there.

2013- Canada shall will. Let's getter done.

Yep it is fixed now. The temps were switched too. I corrected it. All you US runners can enter your miles and °F. The spreadsheet will convert for you. You know though if metric is good enough for NASA maybe the rest of the country could join us too.
It was just a category error. I like thinking in metric, makes me feel like less of a warmongering, irrational American for a moment. The worst is any kind of carpentry or mechanic work. Doing arithmetic in fractions of an inch really stinks, although now that I'm middle-aged, I suppose it's a good cognitive exercise to fight off senility. And I hate having to have two sets of wrenches.

Two inches of snow this morning. Luckily, it had mostly melted on the streets and sidewalks by the time of this morning's run commute, but the wetness felt frosty. Are we all sure it's rational to be running like this? I can't believe this will feel normal in a few more weeks.

I'll only be doing three regular runs per week. All the other ones are just one-mile run commutes. So that explains the high number of total runs I'll be posting, as well as the low average mileage per run.

I didn't realize this was a team challenge. Now I feel responsible, and ambivalent about Rick's mileage at the same time. Maybe we can group all the Europeans into one team, so that it's a three-way race?

Another 6km for me at about -4 degrees. Frosty, frosty, frosty. Yup, people are starting to whisper nutty words a little more.

Hey, just for kicks, I'm thinking about getting a surface thermometer like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FA933K/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I remember seeing a photo of someone using one, I think it was last year's Winter Challenge, but maybe it was somewhere else.

Anyway, has anyone used one of these? I'm just curious about the temp differences between different types of surfaces, mainly concrete versus asphalt. I know the former is colder, but how much? I'd also like to see how much the surface temp varies between morning and afternoon, given the same air temp.

But then what happens if the surface temp is colder or warmer than the air temp (+windchill)? Which one would I use to determine the run's temp category?

Another 6km for me at about -4 degrees. Frosty, frosty, frosty. Yup, people are starting to whisper nutty words a little more.
Yah, if they didn't already think we were nuts for running barefoot, surely they'll be convinced now.
I don't really want to sign up for competition.

HSB, you should give it a try. Plus, now that this is a team sport, we can use all the help we can get! You're really good at self-experimentation, so I'm sure you'll do fine. Just ease into it while you're figuring out your tolerances. Last winter I thought I was ready to join the ranks of those who can run in the snow, but I found that was beyond my capabilities. Just always bring footwear back-up and don't hesitate to put it on at the first sign of trouble.

Dang Lee....I make fun of you for one post, disappear and you take off with your mileage!?!?!?!
....looks like I need to get my mileage back up there....
cold weather on the way!

Vanessa and I are staying at the Wolfestead this winter (Pennsylvania). I think I'd like to participate and see what this SoCal boy can handle.

That is awesome Shacky. One thing though I am calling you a honorary Canadian due to your lengthy stay north of the border (I also still consider Alaska part of Canada as well), your better half being Canadian and with that beard you look more like a Canadian lumberjack anyway. So any miles logged shall go under the Maple Leaf .

Hoping to get out tonight, plus I have a potential marathon distance on Monday as well. Should be some good miles coming before the snow flies.
