Barefoot / Minimalist Running

Barefoot Training

I think my first mistake in approaching barefoot running was impatience. Much like my impatience with walking, I thought that I could just bypass the walking routine and move right into the running routine. Not a good idea, trust me. My feet were busted up on top as well as on the bottom. Just because I can run doesn't translate that I can run just the same without shoes on. In my last post, I proposed that you experience nature with your shoes off. That was for good purpose. Your feet have become desensitized from wearing shoes all those years. Everyone will adapt to being barefoot at different intervals. That's why it is important to experience as many surfaces barefoot as possible. Your feet will tell you what they can handle and what they cannot. Be patient at being barefoot is the best advice that I can give. The next approach or goal is to go for walks. Walk on the hardest surfaces that you can. Just walk casually. No need for power walking or interval training at this point. Just walk at a comfortable pace for a short distance. Keep in mind, introducing barefoot walking / running doesn't have to be a disruption in your running schedule if you are already engaged in such activities. I incorporate barefoot running into my training routines that I am currently following at strategic points. For example, let's say that I completed a long run, so for my cool down I will take my shoes and socks off and just walk on the pavement for 5 to 10 minutes. It's a gradual progression at first.I just tried to incorporate barefoot walking / running as much as possible into my regular workouts. I would start out by exploring barefoot training at least once a week to begin with and progress from there. I can not stress enough to listen to your feet and your body during this transition. Have patience with your progress. Everyone excels at different paces. Results will come but they will come gradually. One side note to interject about. I am writing about barefoot walking / running during the winter season. I realize not everyone has the luxury to not be exposed to the elements of true winter conditions. Just be smart about your training when it comes to facing the elements. I have run in the cold and rain barefoot but I wore specialized socks to shield my feet from the elements. If you have a gym or a treadmill at home, use that. Don't try to brave the elements because mother nature will win every time. Good luck and let me know how you are doing.
